Bulging Disc Treatment

Bulging Disc Treatment in Columbia

Bulging discs (also referred to as slipped discs, protrusions, or protruding discs) are generally less severe than herniated discs. Intervertebral discs cushion your vertebrae and the nerves passing between them from the spinal cord to the rest of your body. They consist of a tough outer layer and a jelly-like material that absorbs shock. A disc may bulge beyond its normal boundaries due to various reasons, potentially pinching nerves or the spinal cord. This can lead to radiating pain through the back, neck, arms, or legs, depending on the disc’s location. Bulging discs typically respond well to chiropractic treatment.

Our Chiropractors Can Assist with Bulging Disc Pain Relief

The intervertebral discs of the spine are usually quite resilient, but several factors can stress them enough to bulge and exert pressure on the nerves, necessitating treatment from our chiropractors:

Poor posture

Slouching, leaning, or hunching can gradually misalign the vertebrae (subluxations), causing the affected discs to bulge.

Poor ergonomics

Lifting heavy objects improperly, having a poorly ergonomic setup at your computer desk, or exercising with poor form can all contribute to bulging discs.

A sudden impact from a car accident, sports injury, or personal injury can displace vertebrae, causing discs to bulge painfully onto the nerves.

Not all bulging discs initially cause pain, but if left untreated, they may eventually do so. Our chiropractors can diagnose the condition through a thorough examination and then offer several treatment options for natural pain relief and disc healing:

Chiropractic adjustments

Our chiropractors’ gentle, precise spinal adjustments realign the vertebrae to alleviate pressure from discs, providing relief.

Therapeutic exercise

Our doctors help patients prevent future disc problems by guiding them through exercises that enhance core strength and flexibility.

A bulging disc may not initially present painful symptoms, which underscores the importance of having your spine regularly checked by our chiropractors. They can monitor and address spinal issues before they cause pain and dysfunction.

More about Protruding Disc Problems

Disc protrusion is another term often used interchangeably with bulging discs. Ideally, the fibrous outer covering of an intervertebral disc should align with the edges of the vertebrae, allowing the disc to cushion between them and enable nerve passage. However, subluxations, injuries, and other conditions can compromise the outer covering, causing the nucleus to bulge or protrude beyond its normal borders. While mild protrusions may not cause pain, severe protrusions can pinch nerves and cause radiating pain.

Fortunately, protruding discs typically respond well to chiropractic care, which can prevent further damage. If left untreated, however, a protrusion can worsen, leading to a herniated disc, which requires more intensive treatment.
